Have you ever noticed that your hair seems to have a personality of its own?
Some days it’s soft, shiny, and full of life. Other days it feels dry, brittle, or simply refuses to cooperate. We often blame the weather, our age, or genetics—and while those certainly play a role, our hair may also be telling us something about how well we are caring for it.
Healthy hair begins beneath the surface. Each strand grows from a living follicle that depends on good nutrition, proper circulation, balanced hormones, and overall health. That’s why changes in our hair can sometimes be one of the first signs that our body is asking for a little extra attention. But there’s another part of the story that we don’t talk about nearly enough
What we put on our hair matters, too.
Think about it. We carefully choose fresh foods for our families, read labels on supplements, and try to reduce unnecessary exposures in our daily lives. Yet many of us use the same shampoo and conditioner every day without ever looking at the ingredient list.
Does that mean every conventional hair care product is harmful?
Of course not. However, I believe it’s worth choosing products that cleanse and nourish our hair without relying on unnecessary ingredients when effective, thoughtfully formulated alternatives are readily available. From a functional medicine perspective, healthy living is often about making small choices that support our bodies over time. Our scalp deserves the same attention we give the rest of our skin. It is a living, dynamic environment that helps support healthy hair growth and serves as a protective barrier for our body. Gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and ingredients that respect the scalp’s natural balance can all contribute to healthier-looking hair. Truly, no shampoo can replace the fundamentals; a nutrient-rich diet, adequate protein, healthy fats, quality sleep, stress management, and addressing underlying medical conditions remain the true foundation of healthy hair. Still, choosing a quality shampoo and conditioner is one of those simple daily habits that reflects a larger philosophy: taking care of our bodies with intention.
Many of my patients have asked which hair care products I personally recommend. To make the search a little easier, I’ve created a curated ‘HAIR CARE’ Collection HERE featuring shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks that align with my approach to healthy living. Once you have logged into the Fullscript, just look for ‘Svetlana Kogan, M.D. Collections.’ Then scroll to find ‘HAIR CARE‘.
If you’re looking for a place to begin, I invite you to explore the collection and find the products that are right for you. Beautiful hair isn’t simply about appearance. It’s often a reflection of the choices we make every day that honor not only how we look, but how we care for ourselves. And sometimes, the healthiest changes begin with something as simple as the bottle sitting in your shower.
