Most of us spend a great deal of time thinking about what goes into our bodies. We read nutrition labels, choose healthier foods, drink filtered water, and even debate which cooking oil is best for our health.
But here’s something we rarely stop to consider: What about the products we put into our mouths every single morning and every single night? Toothpaste may seem like a small detail in the grand scheme of health. After all, we brush for only a couple of minutes and then rinse.
Does it really matter?
A Functional Medicine Perspective on Oral Care
I believe it does.
Our mouths are remarkable. They are the gateway to the rest of the body and home to hundreds of species of bacteria that make up what we now call the ‘oral microbiome’. Far from being something to eliminate, many of these microorganisms are essential partners in maintaining healthy teeth, healthy gums, and even overall health.
Research continues to reveal fascinating connections between oral health and conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pregnancy outcomes, and cognitive decline. A healthy mouth is about much more than a beautiful smile—it is an important part of a healthy body. This is one reason I encourage my patients to think beyond simply choosing toothpaste that promises whiter teeth or fresher breath.
Instead, I ask a different question: Does this product support the health of my mouth while minimizing unnecessary ingredients?
The Foundation of Lifelong Oral Health
Many modern oral care products contain ingredients that are perfectly acceptable from a regulatory standpoint. Yet some people prefer to limit exposure to certain artificial colors, harsh detergents unnecessary sweeteners, or preservatives whenever effective alternatives exist. From a functional medicine perspective, reducing unnecessary exposures is often a simple way to support our body’s natural ability to thrive.
Fortunately, we no longer have to choose between effectiveness and cleaner formulations.
Today there are excellent oral care products that use ingredients such as xylitol to help discourage cavity, causing bacteria, botanical extracts to support gum health, gentle whitening agents, enzymes that help maintain a balanced oral environment, and other thoughtfully selected ingredients designed to work “with” the mouth rather than simply masking problems.
Of course, no toothpaste can replace the fundamentals. Brushing twice daily, flossing, staying hydrated, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and visiting your dentist regularly remain the cornerstones of lifelong oral health. But choosing a quality toothpaste and oral care products is one of those quiet decisions we have to make multiple times a month. Those small choices have a way of adding up.
Over the years, many of my patients have asked which oral care products I personally recommend. Rather than asking them to sort through countless options on their own, I’ve created a curated ‘DENTAL / Oral Health’ Collection featuring products that I trust and often recommend in my practice. If you’re looking for a place to begin, I invite you to explore it HERE! Once you have logged into the Fullscript, just look for ‘Svetlana Kogan, M.D. Collections‘ and scroll to find ‘DENTAL / Oral Health‘.
Healthy aging isn’t built on one spectacular decision. It’s built on hundreds of thoughtful ones. Tonight, when you brush your teeth, remember that you are doing much more than caring for your smile.
You are taking care of one of the most important gateways to your overall health.
