As I always say, we have to look back to understand what is happening and what will happen. Life is a bowl of mathematical consequences. So, let’s continue to analyze what was happening to our kids on their journey from birth to adolescence.
So, your princes and princesses have entered a preschool and all of a sudden, their clustered world has undergone a huge transformation. Remember, we are animals and need to herd for survival. Your baby was born into her first herd by default. This first herd can be tiny: a single parent and a child. It could also be huge: two parents, with live-in grandparents and many siblings. Regardless of the size of the first herd, you were you child’s first leader. Now, however, the second group/herd emerges: a pre-school class or a kindergarten class, with the teacher(s) as the adult(s) in charge. Classroom is where teachers rule, and your kids instantly sense that, and their brains adjust to accommodate to this new half-day or full-day authority.
By the way, so far the children have no problem recognizing adults as leaders. After all, children are small and fragile while adults are tall and strong. No conflict here.
In the previous posts, we already mentioned that your baby’s brain is like a spider-web with gazillions of connections, which are growing every day and are becoming increasingly recognized by the scientists thanks to all kinds of radiation-free research MRIs.
There is a second super-exciting aspect to your preschooler’s brains – and that is the electromagnetic waves they emit. That’s right. Waves don’t just happen in microwaves and in the ocean. Our brains make waves too!
If we hook up special electrodes to kids’ heads and read these waves with the special device called EEG, a striking pattern emerges:
If it’s a newborn or a toddler up to 2 years of age – you get mostly a Delta wave, a very slow wave, which occurs in adults only when they are asleep. That is why we have to come to terms with the fact that babies before 2 years of age are essentially asleep with their eye open. And that makes sense – your baby is mirroring your behavior, eats, sleeps, poops, learns to walk and play with the objects, under the watchful eyes of his first herd – her family.
I think we are all comfortable with that imagery, right? Makes our lives easier.
But wait! Here comes the uncomfortable part:
If you hook up at the same kind of electrodes to the head of a child from 2-6 years of age, you get a completely different picture – mostly Theta waves – the same waves my adult hypnosis patients are giving off. As horrible as it sounds, folks, your 2-6 years olds are walking around in a hypnotic trance. This explains a lot:
Like the fact that you have to say: “Please pick up your stuff!” ten times and will likely have to raise your voice to get your kid’s attention.
This also means that whatever you teach them from 2-6 years of age, will become so sealed in their deepest parts of the brain, forming a subconscious mind, that no-one and nothing will be able to undo that. These are your child’s first lessons of good versus evil. This is their time to understand kindness versus cruelty.
There are two questions we can ask ourselves as parents at this time:
Is my primary herd teaching my child the right thing? To paraphrase, Vladimir Mayakovski’s futurist poem my generation grew up with: “A toddler son comes to his father and asks: what is the meaning of good and what is the meaning of bad?”
Another haunting question is: how is the second herd (a babysitter, a kindergarten, or a religious school) handling my child’s brain? They are molding my child’s hypnotized brain 9-5, five days a week. Do I like what gets into my child’s head? Do I even know what is being said and done to our kids?
If we think of our development in terms of survival, the hypnotized brain of the 2-6 year old makes sense. This is when the knowledge and know-how are being transferred from the elderly animals to the youngest in the herd. Recalling Kipling’s Mowgli helps to picture this reality in brighter jungle colors.
So, if you read my previous posts, you now know that at this same time, the child is asking his “Why” hundreds times a day, because the limbic and the prefrontal parts of the brain are continuing to make their connections and associations. Let’s put all of this together with the hypnotic trance your child is living in.
A playground. A four-year old boy is holding onto his birthday gift – a collection of toy soldiers. He is primally happy as the little animal can be. Along comes another boy from his school and takes a couple of toy soldiers and starts to play with them. The owner of the soldiers gets upset and aggressive and attempts to repossess and protect what is his. The teacher stop him, looks him seriously in the eyes, and slowly says: You have to share! The boy is upset but complies with the leader of his school herd, because his prefrontal cortex tells him to. The boys’ subconscious has recorded (and forever!) that he must share his possessions with other members of his secondary herd. The limbic system has recorded a sad feeling attached to this scenario.
Is this the best we can do for our kids?
